Unlisted campgate from Cyzicus?
« on: October 25, 2015, 03:29:11 PM »
Dear all,

I recently purchased the following coin:

Constantius II
Laureate, draped cuirassed bust left
FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C
Campgate, 7 layers 2 turrets, star above
PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG
SMKA dot
RIC VII Cyzicus ???
19mm, 2.6g

From what I could gather from the "Not in RIC" site as well as other searches (wildwind etc.) this mintmark is unlisted with the dot and the AVGG reverse. Is this actually unlisted or did I miss something?

Thanks!
Tjaart

The mintmark SMKA • and reverse legend of PROVIDENTIAE AVGG is RIC VII Cyzicus 34. It is supposed to have an obverse of Constantine I though, so yours is a mule- an obverse of Constantius II paired with a reverse for Constantine I. Below is an example of Cyzicus 34

Thanks for this Victor. It appears to be the second mule of the Cyzicus that I own.

The Cyzicus mint seemed to have some quality control issues at this time, below is an example for Constantine II that I have.
