Constantine I campgate from Siscia
« on: June 08, 2015, 09:21:09 AM »
This campgate has an unusual design in the bottom row of the campgate. The star between the turrets is barely visible, maybe because of a weak strike/ clogged die.

Constantine I
A.D. 328-9
20mm    3.3gm
CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; Laureate head right.
PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG; camp gate, two turrets, no doors, star above.
in ex. ASIS double crescent
RIC VII Siscia 214

Hi Victor,

Interesting coin. I have two campgates with a diagonally striped bottom layer but with mintmark dot EpsilonSIS dot and dot GammaSIS dot.

I would love to get this coin. Do you perhaps know where it is for sale?

Thanks!

I hope to have it listed in my Vcoins store soon.

Hi all,

I recently managed to get another one of these, diagonally striped base campgates. So now I have .BSIS., .GammaSIS. and .EpsilonSIS. The attached images are from the dealer.

I'd never noted this detail, I think I'll dig out my campgates and take a look.

Hi all,

I recently managed to get another one of these with the diagonal lines in the base. It is not in the greatest condition but I got it rather cheaply.

Constantine I 326-327AD
Laureate, CONSTAN-TINVS AVG
Campgate, 6 layers, 2 turrets, star above, diagonal lines in base, dots in top
row, PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG
dot ASIS dot
RIC VII Siscia 200
19mm, ~2.6g
So now I have .ASIS., .BSIS., .gammaSIS., .epsilonSIS.

I am still looking for a replacement .epsilonSIS. as mine quite bad and then the missing .deltaSIS.

Actually, it looks like it is in pretty good shape, nice surfaces with some encrustations. I have had some success with cleaning coins like that, but you always have to be ready for the fact that the coin might look worse...it can be risky.

I was thinking of cleaning of some of the dirt but as the coin is actually quite flat (as seen on the rev bottom right), it might take away some of the contrast. I would love to get some of the green malachite off but haven't been able to get my hands some ammonia.

Given that the original coin that started this thread does not have the dots around the exergue, I was wondering if the dots represent anything special?

They distinguish between the 4 different issues, starting with plain ASIS (324- 325), ASIS wreath (325), dot ASIS dot (326- 327), and ASIS double crescent (328- 329)
