Theodosius I GLORIA REIPVBLICE campgate with consular bust
« on: October 02, 2014, 04:56:22 PM »
This AE3 consular bust issue was probably issued to commemorate the consulship of Theodosius in A.D. 388. RIC rates this coin as merely scarce but I would say they are at least rare, if not very rare. The first picture was from Ebay, the second is mine.

Theodosius I
A.D. 384- 388
DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG; pearl diademed, draped in imperial mantle, holding mappa and scepter.
GLORIA REI-PVBLICE, campgate with two turrets, Chi-Rho between them. In left field B.
In ex. TES
RIC IX Thessalonica 59b

Here is another example from an older post.

Here is another example

Theodosius I
A.D. 384- 388
18mm   2.3gm
DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG; pearl diademed, draped in imperial mantle, holding mappa and scepter.
GLORIA REI-PVBLICE; campgate with two turrets, Chi-Rho between them.
In ex. TES
RIC IX Thessalonica 59b

Dumbarton Oaks dates this issue to A.D. 385 because of the consular dress.
