Eugenius VICTORIA AVGGG
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:40:41 AM »
At first glance, this coin might not seem like much, but considering how rare coins from Eugenius are, it is pretty nice and has a good portrait.

Eugenius was a usurper in the West (installed by the real power- the Frank chieftain Arbogast) against Theodosius I and only lasted for two years before being executed after the Battle of Frigidus (modern day Slovenia).

Eugenius
A.D. 393- 394
AE 4
D N EVGENI-VS P F AVG; diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right.
VICTORIA AVGGG; Victory advancing left.

The mintmark is not clear from the picture, but given the letters, it is from Lyons or Arles.
