Constantine I hybrid with eyes to heaven
« on: October 15, 2013, 04:53:38 PM »
I'm proud to show this exceptional (unique?) coin:

O/: CONSTAN-TINVSAVG [CONSTANTINVS AVG]; head r., with plain diadem, looking upwards. [CYZICUS 57].
R/: PROVIDEN-TIAECAESS [PROVIDENTIAE CAESS]; camp gate, two turrets, no doors, star above, varying number of stone layers. SMKS• in exergue [CYZICUS 37-38].

It proves that Providentiae type for Caesars (but certainly not for Crispus) was minted also during the second issue with m.m. SMKA• [CYZICUS 55-57], when Constantine's I bust changed from laureate to diademed.

It's a neat coin. Bruun knew that the Caesars must have had coins issued in their name for the second issue of SMKA•, but was not able to differentiate them properly, so he did not include them in the second issue. "The obverses of the Caesars have to be classified with the aid of the growing size of busts, and on this point, the authors material is very unsatisfactory."
