Maximinus II ancient forgery
« on: September 26, 2013, 10:19:22 AM »
I bought this coin because it is an unlisted officina, but when I got it, I saw that it was a cast forgery. It looks like an ancient cast forgery though, which makes it interesting.

An ancient cast forgery is usually lighter than an original one.

I will probably never be able to prove conclusively if this one is ancient, but I am mainly thinking it is because it is an unlisted officina.

Are you sure it's cast? It could also be simply heavily corroded or cleaned with acids.

Yes, it could just be overcleaned, but there is a bit of what looks like a seam on the edge, and general softness of details, like the missing bit on the reverse below the exergue, it is very smooth.
