Aurelian and Severina
« on: October 16, 2024, 08:39:49 AM »
I just got a couple of lots of coins in and two of them are Aurelian and his wife Severina. The Aurelian is an Ӕ As with Aurelian and Severina on the reverse and the head of Sol between them. Aurelian tried to make Sol the main god of the Romans. On the antoninianus, the severe Severina portrait looks a little too much like Aurelian. The antoninianus was introduced by Aurelian and contained 5% silver. The XXI in the exergue stood for the ratio of 20:1; which meant that 20 of these new coins had as much silver as 1 denarius.
