Summer cherry-picking on eBay
« on: August 15, 2024, 10:40:21 AM »
On some forums eBay gets bashed a bit as this horrible place filled with fakes...and while there are a lot of fakes; there are also lots of great coins. This summer I bought quite a few coins from eBay and here are some of my favorites.

The first two coins are not in RIC. I don't have better photos because the coins are still being slowly cleaned.

Constantine I
A.D. 317
CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; laureate and cuirassed bust right; spear across right shoulder and shield on left.
SOLI INVICTO COMITI; Sol rad., raising r. hand, globe in l.; stg. l., chlamys across l. shoulder, across fields T-F.
in ex. •ATR
RIC VII Trier –

Constantine I
A.D. 318- 319
18x19mm 3.1g
CONST-ANTINVS AVG; helmeted and cuirassed bust right.
VIRTVS AVGG; campgate with three turrets and closed gate; across fields P-R
In ex. RP
RIC VII Rome –

you can't go wrong at 24euros for this Sol coin from Rome

Constantine I
A.D. 316
19mm 3.6g
IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
SOLI INVICT COM D N; Sol rad., stg. L., raising r. hand, Victory on globe in l., chlamys across l. shoulder.
in left field ✶, in right crescent.
In ex. RS
RIC VII Rome 49

$55 for this Arcadius

Arcadius
A.D. 378- 383
23mm     6.1g
D N ARCADIVS P F AVG; pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right, holding spear and shield, Hand of God above holding wreath.
GLORIA ROMANORVM; emperor holding standard with cross on banner & resting shield at side, bound captive seated on ground to left. In ex. ANTS
RIC IX Antioch 41b

I got this Maximinus with the obverse legend MAXIMINO P F INV AVG for $81

Maximinus II
A.D. 310-311
Æ Follis 26mm 6.8g
IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINO P F INV AVG; laureate head right.
GENIO IMPERATORIS; Genius standing left, holding patera & cornucopiae; crescent in right field.
In ex. HTE
RIC VI Heraclea 54a

I got this coin with hand raised in a large group lot. The obverse legend looks like it ends in an O (NOB O). Maybe an engraving error or the result of die deterioration or corrosion.

Constantine II
A.D. 322- 323
18x19mm     2.7g
CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C; bust left, laureate, draped and cuirassed, raising right hand, globe in left.
BEATA TRAN-QVILLITAS; globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS/XX; above, three stars.
In ex. •PTR•
RIC VII Trier 387

This Constans for $20.50...I felt like I stole it!

Constans
A.D. 348- 350
19x20mm      4.6g
DN CONSTANS PF AVG; pearl-diadem, draped, cuirassed, globe in hand
FEL TEMP REPAR-ATIO; Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand which points downward between him and small figure, advancing right, head turned to left. With his right hand he is leading a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree.
In ex. SMNB
RIC VIII Nicomedia 70

I just got this coin for $50...not such a great deal; but I was looking for a nice example of this type for my Maximianus as Hercules collection.

Maximianus
A.D. 285- 295
Æ Antoninianus 22x23mm 3.4g
IMP C M AVR VAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG; radiate and cuirassed bust right.
IOV ET HERCV CONSER AVGG•; Jupiter standing right, holding globe and sceptre, facing Hercules standing left, holding victory, club and lion's skin; between them Z.
In ex. XXI
RIC Vii Antioch 622

and my most recent purchase was this Constantine I as Caesar. It was not a bargain at $165; but is a nice example of this type.

Some lovely gems in there Victor! I wonder if the economy and the higher selling fees at bigger auction houses are leading to better material on eBay?

I picked this Fel Temp up last Australian summer on eBay for the equivalent of just under 40 usd. It’s got some nice original silvering and a few details I like, including the large gap in the mint mark and the ‘ghost Persians’.

Constantius II, 351-354 CE
AE Centenionalis Diameter: 19-21 mm, Weight: 4.42 grams, Die axis: 1h

Obverse: DN  CONSTANTIVS PF AVG
Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust to left, holding globe in right hand.

Reverse: FEL TEMP REPARATIO
Emperor standing left, holding standard decorated with cross before him, shield behind, two Persian captives kneeling on left, star in field to left.

Mint: SMKS: Cyzicus

References: RIC 84

That's a nice FEL TEMP. It's interesting that the captives have long flowing robes that trail along the ground and the Emperor is actually standing on them.

and my latest for $26
