Help with undertype
« on: July 23, 2024, 01:57:20 AM »
Hi all,

I recently got his coin and I am trying to figure out what the underlying type was.

On the reverse there seems to be something like a wheel to the left of the campgate or it could be a star in crescent followed by an A.
Below the campgate the text seems to read "..COMIS(?)I..."

Very hard to say!

It seems like it has been overstruck multiple times, maybe with different dies.

It seems like there's "TIAE CAESS" on it, and (less sure, but matching) "PROVIDE", which would be PROVIDENTIAE CAESS - either campgate or Nicomedia Jupiter type, but then it also has that star-over-crescent mintmark which can only be Arles where PROVIDENTIAE CAESS wouldn't fit.

it's a Sol coin from Arles, probably RIC VII Arles 164

Yes, with overtype of Constantine II PROV. CAESS campgate and a mintmark ending in "T".

If the overtype is official (doubtful?) then could be Rome (mintmark RT or RFT) based on bust style. Arles ARLT and PCONST also end in "T", but bust style is wrong.

Thank you both! I really appreciate the insight! I am thinking it is probably not official but still very interesting!

Thanks!
