An interesting Theodosius II type
« on: January 20, 2023, 03:08:41 PM »
This coin sold for 185EUR.

AE4 1.92g

D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Theodosius I to right.
SALVS REI-PVBLICAE Emperor enthroned facing, holding cruciform sceptre and mappa; star in field left.
Exergue off flan, Constantinople mint
RIC X 424

RIC dates the type 423-5, possibly minted for Theodosius consulship in 425 or 426.

I have not seen the type before and it's not on Mr. Esty's list of late Roman types. R5 in RIC, so likely very rare still. Interesting with the consular reverse.
