Campgate with "eyes to heaven"
« on: June 20, 2012, 06:34:18 PM »

Constantine I
A.D. 328-9
18x19mm  2.8gm
CONSTAN TINVS AVG head with plain diadem, looking up to Heavens
PROVIDEN TIAE AVGG [In honor of the foresight of the Emperors]
campgate with two turrets and star above.
Ex. SMKB dot
RIC VII Cyzicus 57

This coin is fairly rare because this bust with the campgate reverse was only issued at Cyzicus. My picture didn't turn out so well, but the coin is slightly porous and has a bit of a weak strike on the obverse.

"How deeply his soul was impressed by the power of divine faith may be understood from the circumstance that he directed his likeness to be stamped on the golden coin of the empire with eyes uplifted as in the posture of prayer to God: and this money became current throughout the Roman world." Eusebius (IV.15)

Here's one that I just won the bid on.

Constantine I
A.D. 328-9
19mm   2.8gm
CONSTAN TINVS AVG, head with plain diadem, looking upwards.
PROVIDEN TIAE AVGG [In honor of the foresight of the Emperors] campgate with two turrets and star above.
In exergue SMK delta dot
RIC VII Cyzicus 57

Not reverse die-match, but likely the same die carver:

the diadem is interesting...diagonal lines and no dots in between.

It was also what caught my eye first, before noticing that it had the upwards looking effigy

That is indeed an interesting diadem. I have never noticed one like that before. Something else to add to my list of things to watch out for.

I think I have one similar to Seth’s. It’s difficult to photograph. The head tilt is not especially pronounced but it’s there. I think the diadem is the same—ladder  with no dots.

I was taking some photos in my long journey to catalogue all my campgates and realised that I also have one like this. A different officina though (SMK epsilon dot)

Funny enough, mine was also quite difficult to photograph :)
