unofficial VLPP from Siscia-- lost in translation
« on: August 13, 2021, 04:03:47 PM »
This is probably my most poorly engraved unofficial Siscian VLPP ever. The obverse is a decent attempt at the standard H12 bust-- helmeted and cuirassed with spear and shield; but the reverse is a hot mess. There is no trace of an altar and the victories have been turned into soldiers; though they have breasts. The one on the left has a spear and they seem to be holding a shield between them. I have thought that some of these coins might have been engraved by people that had never seen an official type. They merely copied other unofficial coins already circulating; which may not have been very faithful copies to begin with.
