ridiculous price for Constantine II VLPP from Lyons
« on: November 24, 2015, 09:00:53 PM »
I just saw this coin for sale on an auction site. It is Constantine II (RIC VII Lyons 90) and while an r5, it is hardly worth the 2,000 euro asking price. The seller claims to be "THE BEST EXPERT IN FIELD OF ANCIENT COINS" but thinks that this coin is from London.  ::)  He also apparently only checked Cohen. The "best expert" also doesn't know that this coin was definitely issued before the listed dates of A.D. 337- 340 and the reverse legend is actually VICTORIAE LAET PRINC PERP, not VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP.

Clearly an expert " in his own mind " Victor.
Still an interesting coin, shame about the read up & seller.
The closest I have to it is a similar issue for his Dad Constantine I, needs a good clean which should reveal a nice example.

That sounds good to me !!
I am wondering how much I could expect from this one which is rarer than the 2000$ R5 of the seller because not in RIC (Bastien 28).  ::)

I saw this old thread and it reminded me that I actually bought this coin in 2020...for much less than the original 2,000 euros.

It was struck with two flans stuck together

Constantine II
A.D. 320
19mm 5.8g
D N CONSTANTINO IVN NOB C; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
VICTORIAE LAET PRINC PERP; two Victories stg., facing one another, together holding wreath inscribed VOT PR on altar.
in ex. P two captives L
RIC VII Lyon 90
