Is it or isn't it?
« on: November 23, 2018, 02:59:35 PM »
I found this coin in England, county of Lincolnshire recently. Its diameter is closer to 12mm, thin flan & slightly dished. The head is reminiscent of a Republican Denarius. As to the reverse, not sure even of the orientation. Was identified as a FEL TEMP copy, but I have my doubts. It leans towards a Celtic bronze for me. Would be grateful of any comments.

Yes, I believe that it is copying a FEL TEMP.  The obverse legend looks like CON, so something like Constantius. I believe that the obverse bust is also only laureate, but due to preservation and perhaps poor striking does resemble a helmet. The reverse does look like the orientation is pretty close, since it seems like I can make out an arm reaching up with a soldier over top spearing down. Of course, with highly stylized copies it almost becomes a Rorschach test.

My thanks, that really helps. The 'globe' on reverse had me wondering too! Will have a look at my collection for any other copies.

I think that the "globe" on the reverse is the rear of the horse. Official examples from Arles often have a very round appearance.
