Severina Tetradrachm from Alexandria with Nike reverse
« on: June 23, 2018, 02:20:50 PM »
I just got this coin in, which is apparently a rarer reverse type for Severina.

Severina
A.D. 274- 5
Alexandria, Egypt
Ӕ Tetradrachm
21x22mm     7.0gm
OVΛΠ CEVHΡINA CEB; diademed and draped bust right.
ETOVC; Nike advancing right with wreath and palm branch over shoulder; Z in right field.
Emmett 3968

Wife of Aurelian

Great coin! I only have one or two in my tetradrachm collection. The reverse on that one looks nice and sharp!

Yes, it is a really nice example. I only dabble in Alexandrian coinage, but have several references, but mainly use Emmett.

My main reference is also Emmett and to a lesser extent, Milne. I still have a big Egyptian tetradrachm collection (over 300) but it seems that I am starting to loose interest slightly. I have been toying with the idea of letting go of most of them. Maybe just keep a smaller subset. I was thinking maybe just one rare one per emperor.

one per emperor would be OK, but there are some neat types and it might be hard to choose just one.
