Campgate from Lyons
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:30:07 PM »
Here is a nice campgate from Lyons that I just got. These tend to be a bit scarce and this one is a sharp example.

A footnote in RIC references a coin with a dot in the archway, like this one; however I believe that this is nothing more than a centering dot.

Yes, they are actually a bit harder to find than the RIC listing of "scarce" indicates.

Nice samples.
May I suggest the idea that the same obverse dies could have been used for both issues PROVIDENTIAE AVGG and SARMATIA DEVICTA. Keeping in mind that obverse die lifetime should be twice longer than reverse one.
Here is a little "galerie de portraits" to compare the two issues (no matching dies here).

Yes, it would not surprise me to find obverse die links.
