Campgate from Rome: unlisted?
« on: February 11, 2018, 05:00:22 AM »
Hi all,

yesterday the annual Basel coin fair happened here and as usual I attended but without any high hopes. Although there are a number of stands focussing on Roman coins, they tend to be outside my price range. Two years ago I managed to find a little gem in a dealer's "cheap/junk box" (http://www.lateromanbronzecoinforum.com/index.php/topic,622.msg1791.html#msg1791). Last year I bought nothing at the show at all so this year I was not expecting to find anything. However, as usual I was perusing a tray filled with coins for CHF20 each and guess what I found. Another (unlisted?) campgate! It is not in greatest shape but I was thrilled.

Helmeted, cuirassed bust right
CONSTAN-TINVSAVG
Campgate, 4 turrets, no star, no doors, P in left, R in right
VIRTV-SAVGG
RT in exe.
19mm, 3.4g

Is this really an unlisted variety (variation of RIC VII Rome 184) or are my search skills just a bit poor today?

Thanks!
Tjaart

It is not a variety, but is actually RIC 184; it is, however, an unlisted workshop. Congrats on your new campgate.
