Constantius II GLORIA ROMANORVM...troubles of A.D. 350
« on: November 18, 2012, 02:27:04 PM »
This coin tells a bit about the problems of the year 350. It was a type minted by Magnentius who struck some in the name of Constantius II , as he wanted to secure recognition from him. This type was only struck in Rome. Nepotian also issued this type (according to RIC, a bit more crude though) for Constantius during his short seizure of Rome and then when Magnentius was restored, the type was continued, but on a reduced module.

When assigning RIC numbers to these, it is a bit arbitrary since the biggest difference between the issues is size, and there is overlap, i.e. Second series first group (Magnentius) RIC 195- 197 dia. 25- 26mm, second group (Nepotian) RIC 198- 200 dia. 23- 25mm, third group (Magnentius) RIC 204- 205 dia. 22- 24mm
