Constantine I campgate from Rome

this is a pretty rare campgate from Rome. It has closed doors, an archway over the door and windows in the turrets.

Nice example! Those are really desirable campgates but the price on this one went too high for my budget.

I was a little surprised that it was under my max bid. I figured that if it doesn't eventually sell in my store, I don't mind keeping it.

I have been paying particular attention to Constantinian types for about 15 years, but especially the variants, like campgates with windows.



an example that just sold in the latest Leu auction for 460 CHF, in nicer condition, though no windows.

Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 19 mm, 3.29 g, 5 h), Rome, 318-319. CONSTANTINVS AVG Helmeted, laurate and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to the right; two stars on helmet. Rev. VIRTVS AVGG / P - R / RQ Camp gate with three turrets and closed doors. Cohen -. RIC 176. Very rare and unusually nice. Minor scratch on head, otherwise, extremely fine.

That is a great coin! Seems I will have to up my budget for these varieties...

I see you mention "no windows". From the image I presume you mean "no windows" in the turrets? Or do you mean the two "windows/arches" as seen in the case of Arcadius (RIX IX Thessalonica 62 var)?

I've always called them windows in the Arcadius variety but I have never really focussed that much on the turret details.
