Interesting style variation on Valentinian II campgate
« on: March 27, 2017, 08:52:44 AM »
Hi all,

I recently purchased this Valentianian II campgate for two reasons. 1) overall the coin is in very good condition and 2) the style is different from other campgates from the same time. I see at least 3 style differences:
a) there are more than 6 layers. These LRB campgates usually have only 4-6.
b) it seems that the engraver got lazy and simply made horizontal and vertical lines for the bricks instead of the usual effort.
c) it seems to have a dotted outline to both the gate itself and the door frame. This dotted style is usually only seen on earlier, Siscia campgates (if I recall correctly).

Valentinian II 384-388AD
Pearl diadem, cuirassed bust right, DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG
Campgate, 9 layers, 2 turrets, no star, no door, A in left, GLORIA REI-PVBLICE
TES
RIC IX Thessalonica 62a (1)
12.2mm, 1.08g

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

It is neat example.       Yes, mainly the dotted borders are from Siscia, but below is an Arles example

Ah, yes, I forgot about the dotted borders from Arles. Thanks for the nice example!
