Constans GLORIA EXERCITVS from Lyons with Chi-Rho...again!
« on: November 03, 2012, 03:15:54 PM »
I already posted this one on the unlisted board, but I just got it in and took new pictures- so here it is again.

Constans
A.D. 335
14mm   1.9gm
FL IVL CONSTANS NOB C, bust laureate, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind.
GLORIA EXERCITVS [The glory of the army] Two soldiers helmeted, stg. facing one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shields resting on the ground; between them one standard inscribed with a Chi-Rho.
In exergue PLG

This coin is not in RIC, but this period from Lyons does not seem to be well recorded as all the GLORIA EXERCITVS are at least rare. This coin should be listed after RIC 271. There are not any coins attested for Constans in this series, but the next (RIC 278) lists one example with the same bust (B3).
