Unofficial Arles + Trier campgate?
« on: August 25, 2020, 03:30:22 PM »
Dear board,

I managed to snag a couple of unofficial campgates and were wondering if they really are unofficial. I my opinion they could well be official coins but I was hoping someone could point out why they are currently considered unofficial.

1. Constantine I 307/310-337AD
Rosette diadem bust, CONSTAN-TINVS AVG
Campgate, 6 layers, 2 turrets, star above, no doors, PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG
dot PTRE
Barbarous, Cf. RIC VII 510 for prototype
19mm, 2.54g

2. Constantine II 316-337AD
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust left, CONSTANTINVS IVN NOBC
Campgate, 6 layers, 2 turrets, star above, no doors, PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS
Q star AR
Barbarous, Cf. RIC VII 274 for prototype
20mm, 2.39g

Looking forward to learning a bit more!

Thanks!
Tjaart

I think that this is a difficult situation to say for sure. For both Trier and Arles I am more used to seeing a fuller bust with heavier features...so they seem a little thin/lean; but I don't think I would have thought about it that much if you had not asked. So I would not positively say unofficial. Maybe the seller had some provenance to make them say that these were unofficial, or perhaps they were not sure either and decided to err on the side of unofficial.

Thanks Victor. I've emailed the auction house to see if they have any extra info.
